Why graphics translation matters
Windows games commonly target DirectX while modern Macs render through Metal. Compatibility software needs a translation path between those graphics technologies.
D3DMetal
D3DMetal is a Direct3D-to-Metal translation technology used in Apple's Game Porting Toolkit ecosystem and exposed in supported CrossOver workflows. It can be useful for modern DirectX games, but compatibility remains game-specific.
DXVK
DXVK translates Direct3D calls to Vulkan. In a Mac compatibility stack, additional translation is involved to reach Metal. Some titles may behave better with one path than another.
Which should you choose?
Use recent evidence for the exact game and CrossOver version. If the default works, establish a baseline before switching. Compare launch reliability, visual correctness and sustained performance—not only peak FPS.
